You may be looking to update your skills or get on board with the latest health and safety regulations. Perhaps you want to practise driving across challenging terrain or mastering your vehicle in difficult weather conditions.
Whatever your needs, our courses will get your off-road driving skills up to speed. All our courses are aimed at 4x4 drivers, but we're happy to include other vehicles, such as 6x4s and 6x6s.

This is all about mastering more severe tests, including tough weather conditions. It will challenge both you and your vehicle, with a wide range of obstacles to tackle. You’ll also learn
how to identify and manage risk safely.

If you've already had accredited training, you still might need a refresher course if:
Your last training was completed more than five years ago
You’ve had a recent incident or near miss
A new vehicle means it's time for a skills brush-up.
To join our courses all you’ll need are basic driving skills. But you'll be off road, not on holiday, so you’ll need to wear suitable clothing and proper shoes.
Worth noting: Smaller off road vehicles (ATVs for instance) and some larger, heavier or specialist vehicles (think tractors) are catered for by different Lantra Awards training courses.
Who should attend?
This product is designed for anyone:
operating an off road vehicle in an off road environment; typically, 4x4 vehicles but possibly 6x4, 6x6 vehicles etc.
wishing to update their skills in off road vehicle operating (4x4) and/or satisfy health and safety legislation regarding the safe use of 4x4 off road vehicle operating at work.
What will be covered?
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

Identify risks associated with off road vehicle use
Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment
(PPE)
Understand the main causes of accidents
Identify the controls, systems and components of your vehicle
Perform pre-start checks
Identify and report faults
Prepare your vehicle for use off road
Assess the suitability of both ground and route
Make structured decisions about if, and how, to tackle obstacles
Perform a failed hill climb
Drive over a variety of terrain
Perform an on-site risk assessment
Identify loading and towing capacities
Understand legal and practical requirements for travelling on a public road
Identify the dangers of vehicle recovery/self-recovery
Demonstrate expert decision-making about obstacles, your vehicle’s capabilities, and your own driving skills.
Day 3 Winching Theory
Introduction
Becoming proficient in operating this equipment is an essential skill for everyone required to operate a hand or powered winch.
Overview in brief
This course will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to operate a winch safely, protecting both you and those around you.
The finer details
This training course has been developed to help you understand how to operate a winch safely.
The amount of instruction you will require will depend largely upon your previous experience and sessions will be adapted to meet your needs. Course duration will depend on experience and will be from one to four days.
The training course will consist of theory and practical sessions, followed by assessment.

If successful in meeting the required standards assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of competence and a Lantra skills ID card for your chosen certificate option.
Who should attend?
This course is for you if you need to become proficient in safely operating a winch. As you'll appreciate, this course contains some practical activity that will require a minimum level of fitness. If you have any concerns, please speak to the Provider.
What will be covered?
At the end of this course, you will confidently be able to:
Recognise a range of tasks for which winches can be used
Identify the health and safety requirements for winch operation and be able to carry out a
risk assessment – including emergency procedures
Understand the legislative requirements of winching operations
Recognise the different types of winches and their inspection, maintenance and potential
uses
Recognise and understand safe working practices for winching
Understand working signals and be able to control an operation
Be aware of a range of different winch cables, ropes and accessories and their inspection, maintenance and uses
Understand load rating terminology and how different configurations can affect the
ratings
Recognise when to remove equipment from service
Plan and set up basic winching systems for a range of winches
Recognise the safety zones/procedures for different winching operations
Understand the basics of mechanical advantage (use of pulleys) and how this can be used to facilitate a winching operation
Understand how different factors can affect the winching operation
Demonstrate different winching operations: straight line; offset and double-line pulls. Understand how to conclude the operation and make the site safe.
